Brief Biography Rendra

Born with the name Willibrordus Surendra Broto Rendra in Solo, Central Java, on November 7, 1935, son pairs R. Cyprian Sugeng Brotoatmodjo and Raden Ayu Catharina Ismadillah. His father was a teacher of Indonesian and Javanese language at Catholic School in Solo, as well as traditional playwright. While his mother was a dancer Serimpi in Kraton Surakarta. Childhood to adolescence in spending in his hometown.
Literary talent Rendra already beginning to look as he sat in junior high school. At that time he has begun to show his ability to write poetry, short stories, and drama, for various school activities. Not only writing, but also excellent on stage. He staged several plays, and mainly appears as a very talented poet.
False leg is the title of his first drama are staged when he was a junior, and People in Corner Road is a drama first and was awarded first prize from the Office of the Department of Education and Culture of Yogyakarta at the time he sat in high school.
He first published the poem in the mass media in 1952 by Strategy magazine. After that, his poems have graced many a magazine that was like a story, Art, and the New Strategy. It continues with a variety of magazines in the decade, especially the decade 60's and 70's.
In 1967 he founded the Theatre Workshop in Yogyakarta and Rendra Theatre Workshop in Depok. Since the lectures in the Department of English Literature, University of Gajah Mada, he has been active in writing short stories and essays in various magazines.
Theatre Workshop is very famous in Indonesia and give a new atmosphere in the theater life in the country. Until now, Workshop Theatre is still standing and the basis for artistic activity.
Renda began widely known when holding 'Tent riffraff' at the beach Tritis Parang, Yogyakarta in the 1970s. Drama and the poem is often blocked because of his criticism of government is so sharp. Renda is Doctor Honoris Causa (HC) from the University of Gajah Mada in 2008. He is a Doctor Into HC-19 from UGM.
Rendra passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 22:30 due to illness in Mitra Keluarga Hospital, Bogor, West Java.
